North Yorkshire deal sees Thomas the Baker install CyBake software across entire estate

Local bakery institutions team-up for 12-month rollout

YORK, ENGLAND, JUNE 26, 2012 – Helmsley, North Yorkshire-based Thomas The Baker is installing retail and head-office management systems from local supplier RedBlack Software as part of a £200,000 I.T. infrastructure overhaul.

Thomas the Baker operates 33 shops, three cafes and a butcher/delicatessen across North Yorkshire and Teesside, employing 450 staff. The company is installing York-based RedBlack Software’s CyBake Touch shop control software across its whole estate in a twelve-month rollout. Thomas the Baker is also implementing CyBake 3 bakery management software at its Helmsley head office.

North Yorkshire deal sees Thomas the Baker install CyBake softwareThe baker is an institution in York and RedBlack Software’s team are long-time admirers of its products. Apart from the family firm’s famous sausage rolls (it sells up to 80,000 a week), there has been a particular penchant for Thomas’s yum-yums and flapjacks at RedBlack’s headquarters for many years.

Simon Thomas, director and general manager of Thomas the Baker, thinks the local link works well. He says: “I know you can do anything on a computer these days, but to be able to just pop into RedBlack’s offices or vice versa is really useful. You can develop things easily together.

Jane Tyler, managing director of RedBlack Software, says: “As long-time fans, it’s great to be working with Thomas the Baker. While we have customers all over the UK, working on a sizeable local project like this has been really beneficial. Thomas’s is the kind of independent bakery that fits our own profile perfectly and our developers have gained good insight by having them right on our doorstep.”

Simon Thomas says: “In terms of flexibility, I think the way RedBlack works is quite refreshing. It’s very helpful to us because where they haven’t got answers for some of the problems we’ve got or some of the issues we’ve got, they are happy to work with us to come up with the solutions.”

“Ultimately, we’re looking at reconciliation. We can look right from the beginning, from our raw materials right through to the end product, and account for it.”

CyBake Touch works on EPOS till hardware so shop managers place orders, check-in deliveries and key-in returns/stock-takes via touch-screens while head office analyses orders, sales and waste data for each store. The CyBake Touch software will be running on new EPOS till hardware from RedBlack Software’s industry partner EPOS Group. The new EPOS tills are replacing a mixture of conventional cash registers and computerised tills and will also run EPOS Group’s Quantum application.

Explaining what his company aims to achieve with the new technology, Simon Thomas says: “Ultimately, we’re looking at reconciliation. We can look right from the beginning, from our raw materials right through to the end product, and account for it. We also hope to gain a few other things like ease-of-use and improving our control of waste. We will get a lot more information that should allow us to optimise upselling and achieve better product availability.”

Thomas says that RedBlack’s CyBake 3 bakery management software will be used at its Helmsley head office to tie together disparate systems. This will help the company control stock levels so that it is producing the right quantities of goods at the right time.
