CyBake’s a recipe for success at Hobbs House Bakery

Hobbs House Bakery was established in 1920 and has four shops in the Cotswolds in Chipping Sodbury, Cirencester, Nailsworth and Tetbury. The company also serves around 250 wholesale customers and has 125 employees. It is growing its artisan product sales via wholesale, online and frozen routes to meet the insatiable demand for real bread.

“We use it for processing orders, so when people ring up and either change their standing order or create a new order, it’s all entered into CyBake.”

The bakery is possibly best known nationally for its Shepherd’s Loaf, the product of Hobbs House sales director Tom Herbert’s 2010 TV programme In Search of the Perfect Loaf on BBC 4. The 2kg loaf takes two days to make and contains only locally grown and milled spelt flour, Cornish sea salt and water and is risen with the bakery’s 55 year-old sourdough. The Shepherd’s Loaf retails for £12 in the Hobbs House Bakery shops or comes in a presentation box with next-day delivery online for £21. On the other end of the price scale, Tom Herbert says that he is particularly proud of the bakery’s popular overnight white Sherston loaf which is still made to his great grandfather’s recipe.

Tom Herbert of Hobbs House Bakery

Hobbs House Bakery has been using RedBlack Software’s CyBake bakery management solution for over ten years. Tom Herbert describes the company’s business processes before that as based on a mix of “paper files”, Sage software and spreadsheets. “It was definitely an upgrade for us getting CyBake in that it linked lots of needs and knitted things together,” he says.

Explaining how his company deploys CyBake, Tom says: “We use it for processing orders, so when people ring up and either change their standing order or create a new order, it’s all entered into CyBake. And then when it gets to 1.30pm, we hit the button and it translates all of that information into recipes in the bakery.

“So I guess what CyBake does is really help us to deliver great customer service – it doesn’t make the bread for us but it does a lot of the other things.”

“For each of our 250 customers, we also have about 250 products that we sell on a daily basis, so as much as we’re bakers we’re also into logistics. And it’s CyBake that holds all that information together for us and converts it into recipes that then we can use it for costings as well as managing our costs and managing our prices and managing our accounts.”

Tom describes CyBake as a reliable and practical solution that interfaces smoothly with Hobbs House Bakery’s Sage accounting package.

“We’ve got a team of five sales staff that use it and then obviously that information is relied upon by the bakers and the dispatch teams in order to create the right recipes in the right order to ensure that we can match our fantastic product with an excellent service. So I guess what CyBake does is really help us to deliver great customer service – it doesn’t make the bread for us but it does a lot of the other things.”
